Tuesday, last week of 1st quarter!!
SL-
Students should continue to work on their vocab/ roots for the exam on Thursday. We will begin reading chapter 23 on Wednesday. The reading has been a bit slow and I think we are all ready to wrap up the book, but my attempt to give homework was only met with about 50% compliance, so I don't have another option than reading in class. We will begin 2nd quarter with the essay on this novel.
HL-
Students are finishing up the three body paragraphs of their essay. I am conferencing with each student 1:1 this week to review one of their paragraphs. These essay's will be due after the long weekend. Kids should also be studying for vocab exam!!!

HL Weekend HW
Over the weekend, HL classes need to prepare for the writing of their essay's. To that end, they need to complete the following:
* Write topic sentences for the three body paragraph's (one for each of the elements of fiction listed in your thesis.) Remember that these topic sentences will answer the question: "How did this element impact the novel?" For example: The setting in "Hound of the Baskervilles" strongly influenced the overall mood of the mystery.
** Find at least 6 direct quotes to support your arguments. BE SURE TO RECORD THE PAGE NUMBER YOU TAKE THE QUOTE FROM.
Due Monday.

Wednesday 10/23
SL students spent some time today working on their vocabulary. In some classes they had to explain the link between the roots and the words, in other classes they had to write sentences that used the word and also showed its meaning. They will have a quiz on Friday. In the Hunger Games, we moved to the middle of chapter 20. They should be up to date on their Pause and Think's as well as their chapter summaries.
HL students read a speech given by Neil Gaiman at the Reading Agency annual lecture. They were asked to write about bias, both stated and implied. They also need to write a critical response on their own opinion on the speech. These were either due at the end of the hour, or by Thursday, depending on their behavior in class. 5th hour earned tomorrow's due date. It will be up to 7th hour to determine theirs. Vocab 5 and 6 is due tomorrow, quiz on Friday.

If your grade shows an NTI for the "I Am From" poem, please confirm that you have shared the final draft with me in google docs. This should have a red icon next to it, indicating that it is a "drawing".
Printing out the poem and giving it to me does not count as handing it in, I need the electronic version.
Are you getting the text reminders? Scroll down to the entry from September 24th for directions.
Vocab quiz 1 is tomorrow, FRIDAY!! Please be sure you are studying pages 2 and 3 in your notebook!

Remind 101
Today we added some information to our notebooks. For those of you who are still unsure, here is what the table of contents looks like in the notebook:
On pg 60 you will find the beginning of the chapter summaries. This picture is for an HL class, so it says "HOB" (Hound of the Baskervilles). The page number is the same for SL, just with "HG" in that section for "Hunger Games"
On pg 55 we started our first notes on elements of fiction. Today kids learned about theme. Please ask them to share their definition with you, or have them check the board if they don't have it in their notebook yet.
At the far back, and upside down, we have our "Pause and Think" section of the notebook. In that section kids are writing more reflective pieces. Here is the link the the SL Pause and Think, and the link to the HL Pause and Think. The responses in these sections should be 4 sentences. I'm working on getting some writing prompts together for the students who are reading an alternative novel, but that is not complete at this time.
Also, today I discussed my pilot use of Remind 101 with my HL classes. I will be telling SL about it tomorrow. See below for the directions on how to get the reminders. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A REMINDER SERVICE. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO RELY ON THIS FOR INFORMATION. MY FAILURE TO SEND OUT A REMINDER WILL NOT BE A VALID EXCUSE FOR A STUDENT TO NOT COMPLETE THEIR WORK. ALL ASSIGNMENTS WILL CONTINUE TO BE POSTED EITHER IN THE CLASSROOM OR ON THE BLOG, IN ADDITION TO BEING EXPRESSED VERBALLY IN CLASS.
High Level classes (hours 5,7), follow these directions:
Standard Level classes (hours 2,4, 8), follow these directions:

Week in Review
Here is what was accomplished this week:
SL:
We read the first 3 chapters of "Hunger Games." Kids are writing up chapter summaries in their notebook, starting on page 60. They need one for each chapter. On Monday I'll be checking to see that they have all three done.
They are also practicing their vocab words. On Friday we played a review game of pictionary to practice the Greek and Latin root words.
HL:
We read the first 4 chapters of "The Hound of the Baskervilles." Kids worked on chapter summaries for each chapter. Additionally, we began looking at televised portrayals of Sherlock Holmes and read a recent article on his character.
Vocab was due Friday (today), and most kids got it in on time. They will get another lesson on Monday, which will be due next Thursday. We played a review game today on the Greek and Latin roots.
ALL:
Notebooks should be all set up by now. This includes: having a composition notebook, numbering all the pages as directed (begin by calling the front side of the second piece of paper #1), setting up "Pause and Think" in the back, and having a table of contents. Also, vocab lesson 1 should be written down on pages 2 and 3. See earlier blog post for more details on that.

Children around the World...
How are you the same as other children? How are you different? You are going to look at two photo projects that look at kids around the world
Begin by getting a piece of paper and putting your name on top. On the front side title it "Groceries" and number it 1-20. You are going to look a pictures of families with a weeks worth of groceries from different countries. For each image you need to write a sentence about what you notice. You MUST write a different observation for each picture!
To see the Grocery pictures, click on this link.
***NOTE: The country where the picture is from appears ABOVE each photo
Next, when you finish that, turn the page over. Title this side "Prized Possessions". Number your paper 1-15. You are going to look at pictures of kids and their most prized possessions. Again, for each image you need to write a sentence indicating what you notice about the picture. You MUST write a different observation for each picture!
To see the Prized Possession pictures, click on this link.
*** NOTE: The country where the picture is from appears BELOW each photo
Some things to think about in your observations:
** Notice similarities between them and you
** Notice differences between them and you
** What other inferences can you make about: how much money they have, their religion, what's important to them, how often they get new things, what their personality may be like, would you be friends?, do they do well in school?
** Can you infer anything about their personality?
YOU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE ABOUT THESE THINGS, BUT THEY ARE THINGS TO THINK ABOUT IF YOU GET STUCK.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE, HANG ON TO YOUR PAPER. YOU WILL HAND IT IN, BUT YOU WILL NEED TO DO ONE MORE THING ON THE PAPER, WHICH I WILL EXPLAIN LATER.
