End of quarter info
Here are some important pieces of information for the next week:
1. My grade scale, for reasons beyond anyone's understanding, does something strange with scores below 55%. These scores/ grades may appear as W's or E's. When it's time for my final grades to be recorded I will change these to F's. Please don't be alarmed by the strange letters. Hopefully you will get it to a passing score and then you won't have to think about it at all :)
2. Vocab quizzes for lesson 20 will be given on Friday, 10/ 26.
3. The final vocab exam for quarter 1 will be given on Thursday, 11/1.
4. Shelfari reports are due on Thursday, 11/1.

Nick News Opportunity
As you know, from time to time I get the opportunity to pass on a chance to participate in a Nick News show.
This is the information I got from Nick News today:
Other important details:
-We are looking for kids ages 11-14 with siblings 16 and younger.
-Within these kids we are looking for a mix of personalities, ethnicities and genders.
-We are ready to begin filming ASAP. We invite your students to begin by filling out the online survey!
SO, if you are interested in participating in this opportunity, you should begin by filling out the survey above and then talk to me on Monday, or send me an email, and let me know you are interested.
Just to be clear, the way Nick News works, you begin with an online survey, then a possible phone interview, and then, if they decide there are enough kids at the school that make it worth it for them to come out here and film, they will select a couple. So, filling out the survey doesn't guarantee you the chance to be on TV, but it's a start :)
This is the information I got from Nick News today:
A few times a year we produce a lighthearted and funny “Top Ten” style show. Right now we are in production for one such show called “Top Ten Most Annoying Things Siblings Say and Do.” The show is pretty straightforward—we will be traveling the country filming kids telling funny stories about their annoying siblings, as well as stories of how they themselves can be annoying, too. We came up with ten categories into which most kids stories will fall and we will be having the kids rank them in order to determine which category they find most annoying. We will be collecting rankings and stories via online survey at this address: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JXXYNGT
The categories kids will be asked to rank and tell stories about are as follows:
"It's MOST annoying when my sibling(s)...
...tells on me, blames me, or gets me in trouble.
...copies me.
...doesn't share.
...embarrasses me in front of my friends.
...picks on me.
...takes or borrows my stuff.
...is too competitive.
...bosses me around.
...goes out of their way just to be annoying
...is so annoying but I can't help but love them anyway.
…doesn’t share.
We hope to conduct interviews with siblings at school (during or after class). The categories kids will be asked to rank and tell stories about are as follows:

End of EOF Unit
We are coming to the end of our first unit on the Elements of
Fiction. This week kids are preparing for their test which will span
Thursday and Friday. Here are some specifics:
SL: Students will be tested on the story "God Sees The Truth But Waits" by Leo Tolstoy.
They will then take a test which will cover all elements of fiction in the story. They have read the story this week and have already had time to practice identifying the elements. Part of their test will be writing a theme paragraph, which we have also practiced this week in class.
HL: Students will be tested on the story "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield.
Students are filling out a literary elements chart in class this week, after they read the story. This will be part of their test, and can be worked on at home. It will be due Thursday. Thursday and Friday during class they will be going to the lab to write an essay for the final portion of their test. This essay will ask that they compare an element in two stories, one of which will be "The Garden Party".
Home Work:
HL: Vocab 19 is due 10/16, quiz on 10/17
Vocab 20 is due 10/ 23, quiz on 10/ 26

Failure and Success
We continued our work around failure and success this week by watching the Nick News feature: My Big Fat Failure. Kids continued to take notes and think about how success and failure are related.
Thursday and Friday students went into the computer lab and learned how to sign onto their SLP Google Domain. This will allow them to work on Google Docs and share assignments with me electronically, as well as work on assignments both at school and at home. They can find the link to the SLP Google sight by looking under Staff Resources on the Middle School Home Page.
Students had their first assignment: 1 paragraph exploring the relationship between success and failure. These are due at the end of the class on Friday. Students who attended the French field trip to the MIA have until Monday to finish up.
